About Saint Zaum monastery

Saint Zaum monastery Ohrid ... The church of Holy Mother Zahumska (Saint Zaum) is located near the fisherman's village of Trpejca, some 20 km from Ohrid.
Zaum church, like the churches of St. Bogorodica Perivlepta (St. Clement) and St. John the Theologian - Kaneo, is in the shape of a cruciform with a dome surmounting the central part.
The church represents a memorial of the founder Grgur, who built it in 1361. As a donor the bishop of Devol, Grigorie, is mentioned. Among the frescoes there is also a beautiful portrait of Naum of Ohrid.
Although the painting has been damaged, the preserved parts show the excellent painting talent of the unknown painter, especially his sense of natural expression and coloring.
The blind arches divide its three-sided apse. The church in its original shape also had a parvis. The frescoes of the church St. Bogorodica Zahumska are highly damaged.
In 1898 the Zaum monastery was demolished, and later reconstructed.
