St. Clement is one of the most famous Macedonian saints, whose cult is permanently imbedded in popular memory and in folklore.
A lot has been written about St. Clement of Ohrid both in our and in foreign literature, so here we will mention only the most important moments of his life and work.

THE WORK OF ST. CLEMENT
St. Clement was born around 840 AD somewhere in Macedonia.
Some historians think that he was born in Solun or somewhere in its surroundings, and that is linked to the fact that he was called by the Holly Brothers Cyril and Metodious in their mission as a young man (which means that he was living close to them).
St. Clement accompanied the Holly Brothers during their mission to Venice and Rome, where he was anointed as a priest.

After the death of St. Metodious, his students Clement, Gorazd, Naum and Angalerij were persecuted and bullied by the Latin clerics in Moravia.
First they were imprisoned and tortured, and then they were exiled from the state.
So, trough Belgrade, they went to the Bulgarian prince Boris, who received them well and used them for the spreading of literacy.

In 886 St. Clement was sent to the area of Kutmicevica in which the main towns were Devol, Glavnica and Ohrid.
St. Clement remained here for 23 years and during that time he spread the Word of God and taught around 3.500 people to read and write trough the University of Ohrid, which he established and managed.

This University is one of the first ones in Europe and in the World.
In 893 St. Clement was named as the bishop of the newly created eparchy named Velika, where he remained till his death.
Before his death St. Clement left part of his estate to the eparchy, and part to the church that he built in Ohrid.
St. Clement is regarded as the first medieval Macedonian poet.
He wrote a number of prayers, hymns and other psalms in honor of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Mother of God, St. John the Baptist and other saints.

Still, his most important work is the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet.
This alphabet is used today by several different peoples among which are: Macedonians, Bulgarians, Serbs, Montenegrins, Russians, Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Tatars, Chechens, Chufas, Abkhazians, Moldavians, Turkmenistanians, Uzbekistanians and many other.

There are a lot of stories and legends for the miracles that St. Clement has performed, for which a lot has been written in our historical science.
This saint today is accepted as the patron of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
His role in the spreading of Christianity and literacy among Macedonians, and wider, is enormous, and his cult made a large influence in the building of churches and monasteries.

The greatness of St. Clement of Ohrid can be seen by his activities as a teacher, cleric and a writer.
